[28.02.2020]

Hamburg Süd staff will return to the offices in Mainland China and Hong Kong as from 2 March. Preventative measures are in place and staff will be working in shifts between home and the office until 16 March. All client services continue to be available, including counter services.Vessel and terminal operations in the Greater China Area continue to operate normally. Customs houses, ocean terminal depots and all off-dock depots remain open. Empty pick up and laden return services are operating normally.

We understand that productivity is gradually increasing as the majority of provinces in Mainland China return to work. We understand that factories are still working with limited capacity, and transport limitations are still being applied by some local governments as preventative measurements.

Yard congestion for reefer containers and high utilization of on-dock reefer capacity are still critical in Shanghai and Xingang. An increase in import reefer throughput into Ningbo terminal has also led to yard density to reach critical levels. In general, trucking capacity has increased and the number of daily units being processed is slowly increasing, but still significantly lower than normal throughput. In the interim period, we are working on temporary solutions, while ensuring to maintain the cold chain for all reefer containers. If customers elect to make a change of destination, we will waive the usual change of destination costs.

We will continue to provide updates in the event of any changes to the current situation. Should you have any concerns or doubts, please feel free to contact your local Hamburg Sud representative.

Port Congestion Surcharge

Import Reefer Containers to Shanghai and Xingang, China

Due to the extended Lunar New Year holidays, yard congestion for reefer containers has reached critical levels in the Shanghai and Xingang terminals. As a result of the reefer plug shortages, we are forced to divert import reefer cargo to alternative ports.

We recommend customers, when possible, to ship to other Chinese destinations in order to avoid the congestion. This recommendation is particularly important for transit time-sensitive chilled commodities. For cargo already in-transit, we will offer free change of destination for those customers who decide to divert the cargo to other destinations in China.

Hamburg Süd will continue to accept reefer bookings to Shanghai and Xingang under the following conditions until further notice:

1) We will not be able to guarantee the cargo routing nor take any responsibility for the delivery time. Cargo arriving in the ports of Shanghai and Xingang will be diverted to alternative locations until the ports are able to receive reefer cargo again. This situation is outside of our control and is also affecting cargo already in transit to mentioned destination ports.

2) For any bookings in place where the container has not been picked up before Monday 10th February, or for any new bookings from the same date, Hamburg Süd will apply, effective Monday 10th February 2020, a congestion surcharge of USD 1,000 per container for ALL reefer cargo booked to Shanghai and Xingang to cover the additional cost of re-routing.

Please contact your local Hamburg Süd representatives should you require more information.

[05.02.2020]

Hamburg Süd offices will continue to operate with limited staff, resuming normal operations on Monday, 17 February. Hamburg Süd staff members are still reachable and in some cases operating remotely.

Vessel and terminal operations in the Greater China Area continue to operate normally and custom houses are open. However, there are reports of yard congestion for reefer containers and high utilization of on-dock reefer capacity. In the event that any units are diverted to all alternative ports due to limited port capacity, we will notify our customers via the original booking office.

Some terminals outside of China have announced restrictions to vessels that have transited a port in the Greater China Area in the previous 14 days. Our customer service teams are actively monitoring transport plans to comply with local regulations and will advise in case of changes to transport plans as a result.

[04.02.2020]

While port operations are largely operating as normal, Hamburg Süd will offer the following to mitigate any potential delays on our customers’ supply chains:

1. Instant Bookings:

We will waive all cancellation / no-show fees for all INSTANT bookings sailing from the Greater China Area with ETD from 1st - 29th Feburary 2020 for customers making a new booking with the same volume.

Our customers can make a new booking with the following changes:

- Change of Port of Origin or Port of Destination
- Change of equipment type / size
- Change of Vessel (ETD before 3rd April 2020 – subject to availability)

Customers are requested to present the new booking to our customer service team in order to waive the cancellation / no-show fee.

2. Extended Import Free-time for Mainland China

D&D import free-time will be extended from 24th January until 9th February 2020, for shipments discharged at mainland China on or after 24th January. Port storage managed directly by container terminal operators is excluded.

Hamburg Süd is taking preventative and proactive measures to ensure that we safeguard the health and safety of all employees.

*Hong Kong and Taiwan are included in the Greater China Area.
