ECO Delivery

Your sustainable choice

Your benefits from ECO Delivery:

Real CO2 reduction

Unlike CO2 offsets, which entail compensating for CO2 emissions such as by planting trees, ECO Delivery actually reduces CO2 emissions.

Active contribution

You will make an active contribution to climate protection and help to make supply chains more sustainable.

Achieve your goals

With ECO Delivery, you can achieve your sustainability goals even faster.

Verified certificate

You will receive a certificate verified by independent experts showing the amount of CO2 you have saved and thereby make your commitment visible to important stakeholders.

Improve your image

Your will improve your brand image in the eyes of today’s climate-aware consumers, who are increasingly holding companies accountable for their role in global warming.

Encourage market creation

You will encourage the creation of a market for carbon-neutral fuels.

Using ECO Delivery is this easy:

1. When concluding your contract, you opt for ECO Delivery. A surcharge will be applied for each loaded container, which will vary depending on the route and type of container.

2. We will invest 100 per cent of your ECO Delivery surcharge in sustainable, carbon-neutral biofuel from waste resources, which we will feed into our network.

3. At the end of your contract period, you will receive a verified certificate stating the amount of CO2 you saved by opting for ECO Delivery transports.

Certified and verified

For ECO Delivery, we only use sustainable, CO2-neutral and second-generation biofuels that are certified according to the industry-leading standards of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). The certificates on the CO2 emission savings follow the standards of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and are verified by an independent third party.

Frequently Asked Questions

The biofuel used in ECO Delivery is carbon neutral from a Tank-to-Wheel (TTW) perspective, which means the emissions coming out of the funnel stack of the vessel when burning the biofuel are carbon neutral. Until now TTW has been the way CO2 emissions are calculated across the whole logistics industry. Currently the industry is transitioning from TTW to Well-to-Wheel (WTW) CO2 calculations, which takes upstream CO2 emissions from extraction, processing and distribution of fuels into account. This is becoming important now as we see different kind of fuels starting to be utilized across the different transport modes. As different fuels have different WTW CO2 emissions this is important information in order to identify the lowest transport CO2 footprint on different fuels. The biofuel reduces CO2 emissions by 84% compared to bunker fuels on a WTW basis. The neutralizing effect will be verified by Round Table on Sustainable Biomaterial (RSB) and an independent auditor. Read more about TTW and WTW calculations here.

Deciding on the scope of cover for net carbon reduced shipping is the first step. As a flexible product, you can choose whether your entire contracted volume or only certain bookings, for example on selected corridors, shall be shipped carbon reduced. Ask your account manager or sales representative to add ECO Delivery as an add-on to your ocean contract. Your respective selection will be considered at time of booking.

ECO Delivery is priced on the biofuel required to replace the fuel oil that would otherwise have been needed to transport the containers. An ECO Delivery surcharge will be added to your usual Ocean freight invoice and shown as a separate line on your invoice. This means that your existing contract rates for ocean transportation will remain unchanged and a surcharge will only apply to those containers which have been tagged with ECO Delivery and are shipped carbon reduced accordingly.

We have limited amounts of biofuel available today. As the market demand increases, so too will the industry supporting it improve the production and distribution of biofuel. Hamburg Süd is a member in the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) as part of the Maersk group and we act as a licensed buyer and user of biofuel. We are monitoring market developments closer.

All biofuel we purchase is subject to certification by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). ISCC is a certification system for all sustainable raw materials and markets, the entire supply chain from raw material to end product is certified and traceable through documentation. ISCC complies with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) of the European Commission. Since 2011, the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) build the legal framework for the implementation of renewable energy targets for the transport sector in the European Union.
