Sustainability is one of the philosophies of Aliança Navegação e Logística and Hamburg Süd, which count on important certifications achieved by the work done to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Concerns about air quality standards are also among the priorities of the world's leading ports, which have entered into a commitment called the "Global Ports Climate Initiative" (WPCI). The aim is to actively seek the cooperation of vessels to reduce CO2 emissions.
Believing in this collaboration, the Port of Buenos Aires decided to reduce some of the rates of Aliança and Hamburg Süd vessels, which have international certificates for low emission of pollutants. "The decision of the neighboring port reinforces our commitment to the environment, ensuring that our vessels operate efficiently and sustainably," said Gustavo Biluca, Procurement Manager of the Navigation and Logistics for the region of South America and the East Coast.
Container ships currently have the best CO2 emissions per km/TEU compared to cargo planes, trucks, trains and ferries. That’s why the Hamburg Süd Group has committed to reducing its fleet's CO2 emissions by 45% by 2020 compared to 2009.
"The efficiency of the vessels in daily operation is the key to use fewer resources. The so-called Slow Steaming, for example, saves up to 40% of the fuel by reducing the speed by four knots. We are also reducing the energy consumption of our reefer containers by 30% in new construction. All this because sustainability is an essential component of our corporate philosophy", emphasizes Gustavo Biluca.
Environmental Ship Index
One of the projects under the WPCI is the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), which identifies ships that promote reduction of atmospheric emissions above the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's emission standards. The ESI assesses the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx), being a perfect indicator of the vessels environmental performance.
The index is used by ports to reward ships that participate in the ESI and which play a relevant role in improving the maritime and port environment. "All stakeholders in shipping can use ESI as a means to improve their environmental performance and as an instrument to achieve their sustainability goals," adds the executive.
